Can you survive without coffee?

As many as 80 percent of adults drink coffee every week.  As its name suggests, it has very high levels of caffeine although, interestingly, coffee beans actually contain half the amount of caffeine as tea leaves.  A cup of coffee only has higher levels of caffeine than a cup of tea because it is drunk in a much more concentrated form.
Caffeine is a drug that acts as a stimulant to the heart and central nervous system, and is also known to increase blood pressure in the short-term.  The stimulating effect of coffee peaks in the blood 15-45 minutes after drinking - but may persist for hours.  How fast your body processes the caffeine depends on your metabolic rate and how sensitive you are.
Caffeine is also a diuretic and can flush important chemicals, such as potassium, from the body as well as making you dehydrated.  Meanwhile, heavy consumption of coffee boiled in a coffee-making machine has long been suspected of having a cholesterol-raising effect, although the evidence remains inconclusive.

All of these factors are damaging to our general well-being, but the main reason that coffee should be banned is because it is very acidic and will upset the body's pH balance.  I know that some people will find this very difficult.  Caffeine, like nicotine (although to a lesser extent) meets some of the criteria of the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association for a drug of dependence.  It acts on the dopamine system in the same way as amphetamines and cocaine.  Dopamine is a neurotransmitter - a brain chemical that carries messages between the brain cells.  It is associated, in particular, with feelings of pleasure, usually after food or sex.  Any drugs, therefore, that artificially affects dopamine levels may cause a craving for more of that drug.
However, unfortunately the only way to give up your daily cups of coffee is to wean yourself off them gently because decaffeinated varieties can be just as harmful.  The "decaffeination" process has chemically altered their bodies composition and, as a result, they will deposit unwanted toxins in the body that will put undue stress on the liver.

So try to think about your daily intake of coffee, don't see it as a substitute for food or snack -- even worse - instead of water! Remember, coffee dehydrates you and therefore you need to drink even more water during the day. Also, any extra ingredients in your coffee can add a lot of calories, such as milk and cream and watch out for any processed "syrup flavorings".

Have you looked at your tongue lately?

Wonder why the doctor always tell you to stick your tongue out? Your doctor looks for abnormalities in its texture, color and motility (the way you move your tongue) that may indicate a problem. Eastern medical philosophy has always been using this method to diagnose general conditions within the human body. The Chinese, for instance, developed a method of analyzing the tongue after noticing that the colorings and texture showed on people's tongues matched conditions they were experiencing elsewhere in their bodies. For example, someone with a poor circulation and suffering from varicose veins would show a purple tongue with black spots. By analyzing your own tongue you can learn a lot about your body. Maybe you heard that when people are doing the Master Cleanse, their tongues turn black or get a thick white coat on it... your body uses the tongue to get rid of all your waste products.

How does the perfect tongue look like?

Ideally your tongue should be pink, smooth, not too thick or too thin and has a light coating of saliva. There should be NO indentations, discolorations, spots, marks or sensitive points. The texture should be smooth and fleshy and it should also be able to move freely.

Most people get a yellow or white "gross coating" on its surface on a daily basis. Your job is to brush and scrape your tongue at least twice a day. Most importantly in the morning, since your body's waste needs to be removed from your tongue after a night of sleeping. If you are not doing it already, well, then its time to get started. Do you know that NOT brushing or flossing your teeth is a cause for many cancers. Think about it -- your tongue is detoxing and you swallow it back down again.. that is just awful and unacceptable to keep a healthy body.

Tongue diagnoses
Here are different descriptions of your tongue and what they can cause.

Tongue description:
Thin white coating, teeth marks down the sides, pale pink tongue with a few red spots = fatigue, poor appetite, spontaneous sweating, shortness of breath, over-thinking and worrying

Tongue description:
Thin yellow coating, red surface = feel hot, sweat easily, thirsty, constipated, irritable, bad tempered, skin problems.

Tongue description:
White greasy coating, swollen tongue = bloated, fullness in chest and abdomen, feel heavy and lethargic

Tongue description:
Purple surface with black spots = cold limbs, varicose veins, painful legs, headaches, chest pain, liver spots, lack of skin lustre

Tongue description:
Normal with red tip = stressed, tendency to be depressed and upset, unstable emotional state, prone to pre-menstrual tension

Tongue description:
Red surface with yellow greasy coating = skin problems, urinary infections, clammy skin, angry and uncomfortable

Tongue description:
Pale pink swollen surface, thick white coating = feels cold easily, always needs warmth, pale complexion, back pain, tendency to panic, emotionally low, potentially impotent, infertile

Tongue description:
Red surface with cracks, little or no coating = prone to hot flushes, sweats at night, insomnia, irritable, ringing in ears, irregular menstrual cycle

Tongue description:
Pale surface, little or no coating = dizziness, fatigue, palpitations (abnormal heartbeats, too fast or too slow), poor memory, insomnia, irregular periods

Make sure you check your tongue regularly. It is the key to perfect health. Scrape, floss and brush every day, several times a day. The most important thing for you is to look at your nutrition and everything you put in your mouth. It does not matter if you work out 7 times a week, you will not reach your ultimate YOU if you never watch what you are eating.

When you are a part of BeachFit Moms, you are also a part of the BeachFit Moms Food Log, track what goes in your mouth and you get weekly advice and coaching in how to eat. When you eat properly none of the descriptions above will be you, you will have perfectly normal looking and functioning tongue.

Back to basics

Could there be a simpler, easier, safer way to a healthy and beautiful skin? Yes, yes and yes. Stop spending a fortune and take your skin-care regime right back to basics: thorough cleansing and nourishing plus a great, healthy lifestyle. Remember that beauty does come from within. People with great skin really take care of themselves. They have a good diet, they drink plenty of water, they have a massage and they do everything that promotes good skin.

Given the right raw ingredients, our bodies have the power to heal themselves. This doesn't just apply to our internal organs but also to what we often forget is our largest organ - the skin. Nowadays, of course, natural healing is a tough job for the body: however healthy we try to make our lifestyle, we are battling against an over-polluted environment and polluted air and food. Our skin needs extra help in sloughing off toxins, gaining essential nutrients and protecting itself against the ravages of modern living. Unfortunately, as we've seen, many of the high-tech, highly expensive beauty products are not helping the skin but actually hindering it. Skin-care products are essentially food and nourishment for the skin; so, why not treat the skin, our largest organ, with the same care that we give to the inside of our bodies?

It's time to detox your bathroom shelf.
By following this list, you can minimize the dangers of store-bought skin care.
  • Look carefully at the products you use, particularly if you have "sensitive" or problem skin. If you do have sensitive/problem skin, you definitely have to take a look at your diet. Bad eating habits is an immediate reflection on your food choices. And it won't go unnoticed. People can tell right away when you are eating/drinking bad.
  • If the product does not list all its components, ask the company for full label disclosure. A reputable company will happily tell you precisely what is in its creams or lotions. If you are not sure what an ingredient is, ask. Cosmetic language is designed to confuse - for instance, they use "aqua" instead of water. However, in general, if its too long and difficult to pronounce, it's probably to unpleasant to put on your skin.
  • Be particularly wary of highly perfumed or colored products. The chemicals used to make products look and smell nice are often the most problematic. Remember, too, that lots of bubbles means lots of chemicals.
  • Be wary of products that offer a quick fix, If you force your skin to do anything fast, it will undoubtedly rebound on you. And beware of products that claim to be able to "force" or "push: wonder ingredients such as Vitamin C or collagen into your skin. You get Vitamin C for your face if you EAT an orange.
  • If you regularly dye your hair, use natural hair colorings - e.g. henna. Dark hair dyes, in particular, have been linked with increased cancer risk. Highlights are safer than all-over dyes because they don't soak the scalp.
  • Be gentle with your skin: don't rub it and don't vigorously exfoliate it. The outer layer of the skin is there for a reason. Treat it carefully. A gentle, once-a-week exfoliation is fine.
  • Make sure your skin is really clean. Adopt a thorough but gentle cleansing routine morning and night. Avoid products that strip the skin from its natural oils.
  • Don't use a heavy moisturizer at night (throw that heavy night cream out!). It won't allow the skin to carry out its natural nightly detox, rest and repair. Use a light cream or herbal gel.
  • Moisturize your skin from the inside by drinking water (10 8oz glasses a day), it also helps the skin eliminate toxins. Caffeine dehydrates the skin - instead, drink green tea (packed with antioxidants) or fresh squeezed juices. Juices are Skin Boosters! For more info about juicing click here.
  • Of course, make-up is equally full of chemicals. Holistic skin-care ranges do exist but don't usually have the high performance of high-tech make-ups. Try limit the amount you wear foundation, in particular, and make sure you take all make-up off thoroughly.
  • Exercise regularly: lack of exercise can lead to your muscles deteriorating which, in turn, can affect the tone and firmness of your skin. Yoga poses, in particular, take blood all round the body that nourishes your skin and hair. In addition, sweating helps to unblock your pores, cleanse the skin and rid the body of toxins.
  • Stress, tension and tiredness all take their toll on your skin. By adding a quick meditation routine during your day, you'll help your skin recover.
Here are a few simple facial treatments you can do at home, and they are completely natural!

Egg White Face Mask

An egg white face mask is a wonderful way to tighten your pores and give your face a temporary lift. Many swear that it is a miracle treatment for acne, blackheads, and other skin ailments. Though some say that it can be a little smelly, it is easy, inexpensive, and an excellent way to help you feel as though you've been treated at a spa.
  • Crack one egg and separate the yolk from the white. Some prefer to whip the egg white to a light foam, but this is not necessary.
  • Using your fingers or a makeup brush, gently rub the egg white over your face and let it dry for about 15 minutes. It will start feel very tight as it dries.
  • An egg white mask cannot be peeled off so you must rinse the face mask off with warm water.
Some prefer to do the mask right before a shower and rinse it off while in the shower. Use organic eggs if you want to avoid any chemicals that might be found in eggs. Add a tablespoon of honey if you want to add a moisturizing element to your egg white face mask. Do not use an egg white face mask if you are allergic to eggs.

Strawberry Face Mask

If you have oily skin and are looking for an alternative to costly skin care products, make your own strawberry face mask at home. This recipe not only smells and tastes great; it's also natural, effective and less expensive than anything you can find in a bottle.
  1. Mash 9 large strawberries in a small bowl until they are smooth. Strawberries are rich in alpha-hydroxy acid, which helps clear acne and reduce oil. Strawberries also reduce puffiness and circles beneath the eyes.
  2. Add 1 tbsp. olive oil to the berries. Olive oil helps moisturize and clean the skin but doesn't clog pores, leaving your skin clean, supple and glowing.
  3. Stir in 2 tbsp. all natural honey. Honey kills bacteria and reduces swelling and inflammation, giving the skin a taught, youthful appearance.
  4. Squeeze a few drops of lemon into the mixture and stir until creamy. Lemon is a natural astringent and will help to eliminate oil from the skin. The amount of lemon you add will depend on your skin type. If your skin tends toward dryness, add only 8 to 10 drops. If your skin tends to be oily, you can add up to 1 tbsp. lemon juice.
  5. This recipe makes enough for two face masks. Store the extra strawberry face mask in the refrigerator for up to a week in an air-tight container.

Why fancy creams aren't good for your skin

The beauty business is a multi-billion-dollar industry, founded on our perfectly reasonable desire to stay looking young and beautiful. But the side effects of many products can be far less glamorous. You could be putting on your face such unappetizing ingredients such as human urine and placental tissue, animal hormones and sheep fat plus a witch's brew of chemicals to make them look pleasant and smell good. Today, there are extremely many people that are allergic to the common ingredients in cosmetics and beauty products, even such everyday items as shampoo, soap, after-shave and antiperspirant. Even tiny amounts of their ingredients might cause eczema and acne, asthma and dermatitis. Hypo-allergenic products usually leave out around sixty of the ingredients most likely to aggravate allergies; however, they can still cause allergic reactions. Cosmetics make you toxic - they get stuck in your fat cells.

Creams and lotions are packed full with chemical preservatives, synthetic perfumes and colorants - all of which can cause sensitivity and toxicity. Even the active ingredients that are supposed to take care of skin "problems" can themselves cause damage. Many products stop the skin doing what it wants to do naturally. For example, if you strip the skin of all its natural oil, you panic the skin and make it produce even more oil. If you drive acne further into the body, it will cause permanent problems. People who say they have sensitive skin actually have sick skin - sick of the things that are being put on it. The skin simply can't get rid of complicated fragrances or fat-soluble preservatives and so it stores them up for a while and then gets dry or develops a rash.

Do you know that the skin absorb anything that is being put on it?
What we often forget is that the skin absorb everything we put on it; within a very short amount of time that substance will be circulating through the blood stream to every cell in the body. In the case of beauty products, the substance could be bovine-tissue extracts, liquid plastics, paraffin and even acids that, outside of the beauty industry, are used for etching metal. The World Health Organization (WHO) found that many of the colorants used in lipstick, rouge and eye shadow are unsafe. They also found 884 chemicals that were available for use by the cosmetic industry were on a federal toxic-substance list. For example, formaldehyde, used in skin products as a preservative and disinfectant, is a suspected carcinogen (directly involved with causing cancer). Coal tar, listed as FD&C or D&C colors, is a common ingredient in cosmetics, hair dyes and dandruff shampoos. It is also a known carcinogen and has been linked to frequent allergic reactions including asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness and lack of concentration. We could go on and on.
Watch out, too, for "natural" products. Something can be labelled "natural" if it is, for example, just two percent natural and ninety-eight percent petroleum and chemicals. Even products high in natural ingredients needs preservatives. Some use natural preservatives (such as grapefruit-seed extract, tea-tree oil and other essentials oils) but they usually still need at least one of the synthetic preservatives for the product to "keep". Of course, not all chemicals are dangerous - but do you really want then on your skin?

    Eating socially

Being on a diet is never fun... especially not when you are attending social events. Just because you are watching what you are eating, doesn't mean that you have to stay home like a hermit for a month or two! We'd say it's essential to get out and eat out, whether in restaurants or with friends. If you follow these simple rules you can still go to your favorite restaurant. But don't get mad though... just try to be focused and pick healthy options. It will pay off for the rest of your life.

The Ten Golden Rules for Eating Out

    1. Choose your restaurant with care. Pick places that cook food freshly and are willing to adapt recipes for you. Don't be scared of asking what's in dishes or where they come from. A good restaurant will be delighted to tell you and happy to help. If they're not helpful, vote with your feet and go elsewhere.

    2. Order without looking at the menu! You know the food you need. Zero temptation - and you get a perfect meal. Again, good chefs have no problem with that.

    3. Hold the dressings and sauces. Take away the heavy and rich sauces and salad dressings and -- you have a healthy meal.

    4. Ask for food to be grilled or baked, rather than fried. You can eat your fill of steamed vegetables and salad (but watch out for "salads in sauces" such as coleslaw, potato salad, Caesar salad etc.) Ask for plain vinaigrette, on the side.

    5. You don't need three courses - honestly. Try sharing starters and don't even think about dessert until you have eaten your meal.. and preferably had some tea... and waited at least ten minutes -- and you will probably find you're too full to eat it.

    6. If you really crave something sweet, go for fruit salad, or share a sorbet or ice cream, or - if you must - take a spoonful of someone else's dessert. Cheese is NOT a good option - it's very fatty and mucus forming.

    7. Drink tea (herbal teas are even better) with your meal rather than wine and water. It will help your digestion.

    8. If you really must drink alcohol, go for the better wines and vodkas, preferably organic ones. For mixer, go for organic fresh squeezed cranberry or orange juice etc, don't even think about buying "artificial mixers" at the store. Skip the ice, since very cold drinks stop digestion. Drink a glass of room-temperature water for every alcoholic drink.

    9. Avoid the nibbles that come with restaurant meals - crisps, bread etc. All very tempting, all very high in calories and not at all good for your body. Nibble on olives, instead.

    10. Eat slowly and stop when you are full. Just because it's on your plate, doesn't mean you have to eat it. Listen to your body.

Meditation - how to reduce your stress level as a busy mom.

As a busy mom or during your pregnancy, we recommend that you meditate for just a few minutes a day. By meditation we mean turning your phone and TV off and try to be completely undisturbed. Listen to your favorite song or just listen to the silence, right before bedtime is a great opportunity. Take these few minutes to focus on nothing but yourself. Let your mind slip away to a place where you are completely relaxed and stress free. It might take you a while to learn how to shut off the "real world", but the reward is amazing.

Meditation has been used for thousands of years in the East as a means of relaxing and enjoying quiet contemplation. The exercises are designed to allow the individual to create a mental environment divorced from the external influences and stresses of their physical and emotional life, and the demands of the day-to-day living. The need to rely upon stimulants such as alcohol in order to relax after a hectic day takes its toll on your body. Remember that a glass of wine is a big sugar-shock for your body and should be avoided late at night. Meditation on the other hand enriches the body while relaxing it at the same time. The practice of meditation has been clinically shown to not only reduce cholesterol but to bring down high blood pressure as well as improving the general well-being of people suffering from conditions such as chronic stress, headaches, acidity, emotional vulnerability, skin irritations and insomnia. There are various types of meditation and in fact we meditate almost naturally every day without thinking about it, for example when we daydream. Daydreaming is uncontrolled so by adding meditation in our lives we can control our minds and improve its health and longevity.

During the BeachFit Moms class we are ending the workout with meditation, this is a great opportunity for you to leave any stress, anxiety or worries in the room, leaving the class with a much happier mindset and a sense of completion.

    Love rice? Choose brown rice.

We always recommend replacing white rice, in your diet, with brown rice. White rice is brown rice that has had essential nutrients removed when processed in order to make it easier and faster to cook, and to give it a longer shelf life. This is accomplished by removing the bran, and with it, minerals and vitamins that are necessary in our diet.

Brown rice is an excellent source of magnesium, iron, selenium, manganese, and the vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6. Brown rice is a good source of dietary fiber and protein and is far less glutinous. It is the least allergenic of all the varieties and is excellent for the nervous and digestive systems. It also has an exfoliating effect on your gut wall.

    Are you constipated?

For your own well-being, this is an important topic. Constipation can be a real problem, especially for women.

People are more constipated than they realize. It's fascinating that people think that having one bowel movement a day, or even every other day, is normal when they are eating three or four meals a day. First we have breakfast; then at around eleven we have a mid morning snack, then we have lunch, then we might have snack again and then dinner. We will probably have to pee several times during the day, but only do number 2 the following morning, and just once. We may have taken three or four - or sometimes five - meals and snacks throughout the day. This means that the food we don't get rid of, turns into waste and toxins in your digestive system, we feel bloated, gassy and heavy -- and we are surprised!

The trouble is that constipation allows excess waste to remain within your body for a long period of time. It has to be dealt with and we have to encourage the elimination processes within our body to work at an adequate level so that we are having a bowel movement three or four times a day. In this way, as we are taking in food, we are digesting it, processing it and eliminating the waste as efficiently as possible.

By attending BeachFit Moms and join in on the BeachFit Moms Food Log we will keep track on your nutrition and recover and maintain a normal gut mobility. To achieve this, you have to avoid constipation. This means avoiding glutinous foods that, literally, glue themselves to the wall of your gut. One effective way is to reduce dairy and red meat as they can be difficult to digest. Additionally, you should eat more fibrous foods, more gluten-free cereals, green vegetables and salads, and drink plenty of water to keep your food hydrated so that it doesn't become dry and stick to the gut wall.

Meet the creators of BeachFit Moms

Meet the creators of BeachFit Moms

Annika Turner – Founder of BeachFit Moms

Annika is a proud parent of a 9-month old son, William, together with her husband, Bryce Turner, owner of Beach Fitness. Annika always lived a very active life, playing and coaching soccer in her native country Sweden. Being active has always been an important part of her life and moving to United States in 2008 (to be with the man of her dreams!) got her introduced to her husband’s passion and business, Beach Fitness. She started working out at Beach Fitness and it made her even more determined to live a healthy and active life. Annika worked out with a Personal Trainer for two years, while teaching classes at Beach Fitness Group Fit studio. Annika is now a Certified Trainer at Beach Fitness and CPR certified.

When Annika became pregnant, she was determined to stay in shape, and immediately started researching about how to work out and eat while being pregnant. Not surprisingly, the information about programs for pregnant women lacked knowledge, and were sometimes even dangerous. Together with her husband, she created her own workout routines, that was safe and correct – and most important - made her pregnancy an easy journey. Although, an easy pregnancy, little William came out – weighing almost 9 pounds – forcing Annika to an unexpected C-section. The C-section made her realize how important it is to have body awareness and also, how important it is to come back after a C-section surgery, and its discomfort, without any complications, feeling stronger than ever. Annika sees Dr. Natalie King Wilson for her chiropractic care. She also brings her son for regular adjustments. Dr. Natalie made her pregnancy and recovery a breeze, Annika’s OB/GYN was amazed by her health during her pregnancy and stated that she set an example of the ideal pregnancy. When Laura, Beach Fitness Pilates Instructor (specialized and certified in Prenatal/Postnatal Pilates), started working at Beach Fitness, Annika also introduced Pilates in her fitness regime and all of these in combination has been life changing. The idea started growing about creating a program for pregnant women & moms and now it is officially here at Beach Fitness. Annika is now looking forward to educate other pregnant women and moms about the importance of body awareness, proper nutrition, correct exercises for all parts of your body and most of all – have fun with other pregnant women and moms – all while getting them in their best shapes of their lives!

Annika is available for Personal Training Monday – Friday 10am - 4pm.

Laura Adams – Certified Pilates/Yoga Instructor

“When I look into my future, I do see children... BUT I want to go into that part of my life educated, informed, and prepared! So, I decided to specialize in Pre/Post Natal Fitness. It has been the most eye opening and helpful decisions I have made and with BeachFit Moms I share it with you!” / Laura

Laura  was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and found her way to Southern California as she followed her heart to UC Irvine to study dance and soak up the So Cal rays she had always heard of.  There she found Pilates as a means to help maintain the physical demands as a dancer. After studying and certifying with Diane Diefenderfer at Studio Du Corps in Orange County, Laura realized that not only did she have a passion for Pilates, but she also had a need to communicate her knowledge in hopes of helping other people from all walks of life from Pre-post pregnancy, spinal issues, athletes, nutrition and Women’s health.  Throughout her own journey she found Bhakti Vinyasa Yoga to tie in the spiritual understanding of mind and movement and incorporates this method in her daily practice.  She is forever grateful to the Bhakti Yoga Shala family in Santa Monica where she recently finished her teacher training. Laura finds Pilates and Yoga to be both physically and mentally challenging, but best of all spiritually motivating!

Laura is very excited to educate women and moms in Pilates. Laura is one of the few women who has the most advanced prenatal/postnatal Pilates certification in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. With a focus on C-section rehab, Diastasis-recti correction, pubic symphysis correction, and conscious post natal re-strengthening, Laura is eager to let women know that it is possible to come back into your former body if you approach it in the most educated way! What a relief! Contrary to popular belief, Laura was very happy to learn that when you have children your fitness life is not over! She loves to show women that with commitment, precision, and passion, women, no matter what condition, can get in the best shape of their life after childbirth!
